To say that the space sector has seen tremendous growth in the last decade has become somewhat of a platitude. Countless reports show impressive growth and a positive outlook for the future, even suggesting a new ‘golden age’ for the industry. There is also a wide consensus that for the space economy to reach the promise of morphing into a multi-trillion-dollar valuation in the decade to come, we need a strong, resilient, and innovative sector. The health of the space sector today and tomorrow will thus be key to achieving the goals that the space community wishes to see in the years to come.

In this Space Café Radio - SpaceWatch.Global publisher Torsten Kriening spoke with  Rodrigo da Costa, Executive Director at EUSPA - EU Agency for the Space Program, he previously worked at the agency as the Galileo Services Program Manager. In this episode, Rodrigo sits down with Torsten during the EU Space Week 2022 in Prague to talk about his impressions of the EU Space Week and the role of EUSPA. This includes the growth of participation in the conference as well as strategies to help the EU space sector evolve. The very existence of human life on earth today is dependent on space-based services. From banking and money transfers to streaming online content and using maps, the internet and other technological capabilities are being widely used by everyone across the world. From the individual level to the international level, space-based services play a crucial role. However, there are still many challenges and threats within the space domain, that need to be addressed at the national, regional, and global levels. All these imply the fact that space is both a competent and vulnerable domain in the contemporary world.

The global space economy has been estimated to reach 1 trillion USD of revenues by 2040 (Morgan Stanley, UBS), but such numbers have been generated starting from a 2016 baseline of 340 billion USD for the Satellite Industry only and adding all the other marginal sectors in an unclear fashion.

Until recently, only a few States were able to access outer space. Since then, however, driven by technological advances, in particular by reusable orbital-class rockets and the resulting reduction in launching costs, more and more private companies have been able to enter the ‘space race’, and we can witness today the emergence of a significant commercial space economy.

The Space Report 2022 Q2 edition has been published providing insight into the expanding global space economy, reaching a record US $469 billion, with a growth rate that is the fastest in seven years. The edition examines 46 nations’ actualized government space spending as well as commercial revenue from last year.

Farzana also served as Vice-Chair of Business Relations for the UK Conservative Party.

The United Kingdom and the United States signed a partnership to boost opportunities in the UK, the UK Government reported. The agreement lays the foundation for rockets, high-altitude balloons and spaceplanes to lift off from British spaceports. The UK and the US work together on future commercial spaceflight missions in the Smithsonian Institution, according to the partnership.
