Symposium in Oman aims to raise awareness on peaceful uses of space applications

Under the auspices of Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Futaisi, Oman’s Minister of Transport and Communications, the National Symposium on “The Peaceful Uses of Space Applications and Technologies for Comprehensive Development” began on Sunday, 30 October, and concluded on Monday on 31 October 2016, in Muscat, Oman.

Among those who attended included undersecretaries and chiefs executive officers (CEOs) of companies, as well as interested people and specialists. The two-day symposium was organised by the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

Dr. Al-Futaisi said that space applications have been developed for a broad range of sectors, and noted that advanced countries have successfully used them in several ways for economic and social purposes.

In a press statement, Dr. Al-Futaisi pointed out that the Ministry of Transport and Communications is conducting several studies to develop satellite applications in Oman through several committees and workshops with the objective of studying how to apply and develop their technical and human aspects.

The national symposium aimed to raise awareness about the importance of peaceful uses of space applications and their role in comprehensive and sustainable economic development, as well as national capacity-building in this area. A group of international experts in space applications took part in the symposium from six countries, namely the United States, Germany, Turkey, China and Japan, and representatives from the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organisation (APSCO). Speakers presented their experiences in the peaceful uses of space applications and their impact on overall economic development.

Experts and speakers from Oman also participated in the symposium as well to present their experiences and perspectives on the use of space applications.

The experts spoke about the use of space applications for planning, remote sensing, sustainable development, disaster management, telecommunications, and data linking.
