Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd., the satellite networking technology, solutions, and services company headquartered in Petah Tikva, Israel, has been selected by Peru’s biggest telecommunications provider, Telefonica del Peru, to extend broadband and cellular services in rural parts of the South American country.

Gilat will provide Telefonica del Peru with its SkyEdge II-c platform and X Architecture to extend these services. Telefonica del Peru is in its third and final stage of its Mobile License Renewal Contract (MLRC) with Peru’s government, and so ordered Gilat’s SkyEdge II-c platform that is optimized for High Throughput Satellite (HTS) use with X Architecture and Capricorn VSAT’s. This also means that Gilat can enable satellite-based cellular backhaul and rural broadband applications. Gilat previously supplied equipment to Telefonica for the MLRC project.

Gilat’s X-Architecture has the flexibility to support any number of frequency bands, enabling a smooth migration from Ku to Ka frequency bands.

Carlos Flores, Mobile and Rural Concession Manager of Telefonica del Peru, said, “As we transition to High-Throughput Satellites, we chose Gilat from among four of the world’s top satellite communications solution providers. Gilat provided us with the best combination of technology, knowhow and added value.”

Speaking for Gilat, Russell Ribeiro, VP Americas Accounts at Gilat Brazil, said, “Gilat has been working with Telefonica del Peru intensively for years and has a deep understanding of their existing cellular backhaul network and future needs. Because our technology allows for a smooth migration path to Ka-band, we believe we are in a good position to help them meet their very demanding delivery schedule.”

Peru’s largest telecommunications operator Telefonica del Peru provides fixed, mobile and public telephony, domestic and international long distance, Internet, fax, and cable TV services. Spain’s Telefonica Internacional acquired Telefonica del Peru after it was created in 1995 through the merger of two state-owned companies, Entel Peru and CPT.

Spain’s Telefonica is one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world in terms of market capitalization and number of customers. The company has a presence in 21 countries and a customer base of over 327 million around the world.

Marketing in outer space seems like an innovative idea, but it has 60+ years of history. Dr. Wernher von Braun, former Marshall Space Flight Center Director, pointed out on July 22, 1969: "Because without public relations we would have been unable to do it". Today, accelerated access to space provides unprecedented opportunities for #advertising stunts and viral marketing. Some campaigns raise ethical, environmental, and regulatory concerns, while others champion sustainability.
