Day 12 – #SpaceWatchME helps – Donation Campaign

Philippines – November 2013

Hurricane Yolanda/Haiyan hit the Philippines on November 8th 2013 killing nearly 10,000 people. Disaster Tech Lab deployed a team to the island of Cebu to assist in the relief efforts by providing communication services.  In the period between November 8th 2013 and April 10th 2014 DTL gathered and mapped the damage to the local telecoms infrastructure and share this date with other NGO’s and Philippine telecom providers. They provided emergency communications in 4 communities spread across the island and build a permanent network infrastructure in the remote village of Arapal as part of a resilience project. To achieve this, they used a combination of Ka- and Ku- band satellites for backhaul and WiFi for local distribution. In addition, they provided internet access to 6 international NGO’s responding to the disaster.
